Independence

Throughout the time that our pupils are with us we are working towards them acquiring skills that will enable them to be more independent. Once they are 14 they receive independence training. They are then assessed and if our staff are satisfied with their progress they will be able to go out with other pupils to the shops, and other activities as agreed with staff.

The majority of pupils in year 10 achieve their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award with some achieving Silver.

We have a well established work experience programme with particular emphasis on pupils gaining confidence, self-esteem and independence skills.

Older students attend local colleges which prepares them for transition into further education.

Older students live in a different house, no.11, where they live more independently.

We are now providing Further Education places with City College Brighton & Hove, we are delighted how many students signed up for this in this our first year. They are studying there 3 days per week and we are supporting them with their studying and transition into adult life on the other days and in the evenings.

“I think this school has fantastic support. It is in Brighton and I love Brighton!”
