Situated in the heart of Brighton, a stone’s throw from the beach, our school has educated and cared for deaf children for over 70 years. Recently, we have developed a Further Education provision with local partnership colleges ensuring that our deaf young people have the best access to courses appropriate to their needs.
Children and young people, aged 5-19 years, can come to Hamilton Lodge as day pupils or weekly boarders. Those eligible to attend Hamilton Lodge will have a SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) statement or an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan). They are funded by their local authority. Most come from counties within Southern and Eastern England but we are available to children across the whole of England and Wales.
In 2016, we opened our specialist provision for deaf children with more complex needs. You can read more about this service here.
In 2017 we were very pleased that OFSTED rated our education as GOOD and our care as OUTSTANDING. You can read more about our reports and what they said here.
We work collaboratively with local authorities and parents/carers to ensure that our school is the best fit for the child before any decision is made and that we can provide a safe, enjoyable childhood and a full education they can access. Our class sizes are small, usually 6-8 pupils and we teach using British Sign Language as well as written and spoken English.
We have a team of specialists within our Pupil Support Team to monitor each child and young person within the school and college, including children with additional special educational needs. The school SENCo, Speech and Language Therapist, Educational Audiologist, Nurse, Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist within our staff team ensure that each child has structured support that is designed to keep them healthy and able to access their education and their friendships.
We support local parents of deaf children to learn British Sign Language at the school via free classes and also signpost parents and carers to classes nearer to their homes. We have amongst our staff team, deaf teachers, deaf teaching assistants and deaf care staff who provide positive role models.
We provide popular annual events such as our summer fete and our play in December which enable deaf children who aren’t at Hamilton Lodge to socialise and have fun with their peer group and meet deaf role models.
Our aims for every child and young person coming to Hamilton Lodge are:
- To develop a full language to support memory & learning
- To achieve their academic and vocational potential
- To be safe and confident in the modern world
- To have happy memories of their childhood and lasting friendships
- To be healthy and resilient both physically and emotionally
