We are fundraising for a sensory room to support our pupils emotional well-being and learning. In September, we opened a new specialist provision for deaf children with complex needs. A sensory room would give them the chance to play and relax in a space tailored to their needs.
We estimate that the sensory room will cost around £15,000.
Percy’s story by Lacy (Key Worker)
Percy is 14 years old and as his key worker, I would love to tell you a bit about him. Percy had complications at birth which resulted in him having limited hearing and vision, which means his can see and hear a little on his right side. He also has epilepsy as well as cerebral palsy that affects all four limbs, which makes it difficult for him to keep his balance. Bright sunlight can make him feel anxious, so on a sunny day, our playground isn’t ideal. He does, however, get great enjoyment from switching lights on and off, and can often be found switching the lights around the school! A sensory room would give him the chance to have control of his surroundings, from the colour and brightness of the lights to the calming aromas that can fill the room. Fitted in a space with soft furnishings and tactile resources, a sensory room would give him the chance to play and relax safely. He had use of a sensory room at a previous school, where we are told that he would love to relax and listen to music.
My colleagues and I ensure that pupils have access to a specially adapted residential house and classroom space where they can grow and develop in a safe and happy environment. There are however, ways that we could further improve the quality of life of our pupils and for that reason I would like to ask for your help, as we look to build a sensory room at the school.
We are therefore asking the business community to help support this. If you are able to make a donation, please contact me, or our Fundraiser firstname.lastname@example.org or 01273 682362. In return for financial support, we are very happy to publicise your support in newsletters, social media and in press releases.
