Team prepares to Pedal to the Pebbles

A team of family and friends are taking part in this year’s Pedal to the Pebbles as a way of giving back to Hamilton Lodge School & College (HLSC). Taking place on 23rd June, the cycling challenge will cover a 45-mile route starting in Merstham in Surrey, and finishing at the school’s summer fete in Brighton.

Patrick is a pupil at the school, and his mother Claire and sister Rhizzi have rounded up a team of 6 in total to take part, including friends and neighbours.

Rhizzi explained why she is taking on the challenge. “I’ve decided to take part in Pedal to the Pebbles because I want HLSC to continue being able to support young, deaf people. When we were given the chance to consider HLSC as a place for my brother to go to school, not only was I allowed to visit with him, but the teachers on the day were more than happy to answer all my questions. I knew straight away that this was the right school for him. Five years later and his time at the school is drawing to a close. Since he joined the school, the staff have supported him and empowered him to become an independent, young man. Seeing the progress in him is beyond remarkable and I feel like I owe a great deal of that to this school.”

Patrick’s mother Claire explained what the school means to her.  “As soon as we first looked around Hamilton Lodge, we knew it was the best school for him. In a large mainstream school, he would only have been able to communicate with other children in the deaf unit, providing that they signed, or to the adult who would have been permanently glued to his side.  Schools like Hamilton Lodge are important. All children should have the ability to talk to all their class mates and more importantly to the teacher, without having to go through an interpreter.”

She added “I have never done anything like this before and I am very nervous, but It’s a great opportunity for us to give back to the school that has given our family so much.”
